If you’re a high school student or teacher and like to design, construct, and compete, you should have considered racing in the 2016 Solar Car Race at American River College. To be eligible, your school or outreach group (such as Scouts or clubs) had to be in the Sacramento Municipal Utility District's (SMUD) service area and students must be in grades 9 – 12.
The race venue also featured alternative fuel vehicle examples from the ARC automotive technology shop, innovative fuel models and technologies, and exhibited personal electric vehicles courtesy of the Sacramento Electric Vehicle Association (SacEV). This was a great way to test your technical and design skills, plus a place to sit behind the wheel of EVs and discover what you could be driving after graduation.
This year, light rain and cloudy conditions made solar racing difficult, but those students who worked hard to design and build efficient solar vehicles showed that even cloudy days produce enough sun for exciting solar races.
